If You Lose or Find a Pet

To recover your pet as quickly as possible or to locate the owner of a pet that you have found, you should circulate a detailed description of the animal. Here are some guidelines to assist you:

1    Call the Humane Society of Pagosa Springs (970) 731-4771 and ask to list your pet in the Lost and Found Registry.

2    If your pet has been micro-chipped by the Humane Society, call the Companion Animal Recovery hotline at 1-800-252-7894 and report your pet missing. (If your pet has been micro-chipped elsewhere, call the appropriate national database.)

3     Notify Pagosa Veterinary Clinic (264-2148), San Juan Veterinary Services (264-2629) Aspen Tree Animal Caring Center (731-5001) and Elk Park Animal Hospital (731-6400). If you go to a different veterinarian, notify them also. People who find animals often call the veterinarian to report it, particularly if the animal is wearing a rabies tag.

4     Notify KWUF Radio (264-1400). They will broadcast the information at no charge to you.

5     Place an advertisement in the Lost and Found section of the Pagosa Sun (264-2100). It's free and the classified ads have a high readership.

6     Prevent the heartache of losing your dog or cat by always having it wear an identification tag even if it has an identifying microchip. This is especially important when you have just acquired a new pet because it might wander off or get lost while adjusting to its new home.
