BOARD OF DIRECTORS
The Board of Directors is chosen by election at the annual meeting of the Humane Society of Pagosa Springs. The supervision, direction and management of the affairs of the Society shall be vested in the Board. More specifically, board members will:
- Determine and uphold the organization's mission following the organization's by-laws.
- Hire, monitor, and, if necessary, dismiss the employees who report directly to the Board.
- Review the performance of the employees who report directly to the Board.
- Ensure ongoing organization planning, including approving long-range goals.
- Ensure adequate resources-financial and human.
- Establish fiscal policies, financial controls, and annual budgets that ensure the effective management of resources.
- Set and monitor overall goals and services.
- Serve as a link to the community-promoting the work of the organization and interpreting the needs of the community.
- Annually assess the performance of the organization and the Board.
And commit to:
- A two-year term
- Nine meetings of the Board per year
- Annual membership in the Humane Society of Pagosa Springs
Current directors and officers include:
Larry Schwartz - President
Larry has been a part time resident since 2004 and became a full time resident in 2006. Larry is a semi-retired Orthodontist from Florida who provides services for the residents of Haiti nine times a year. Since moving full time to Pagosa Springs in 2006, he has volunteered at the Humane Society. Larry is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of New York and has used his talent at many of the Humane Society fundraising events. Larry currently has three dogs and three cats of which four are rescued, and he is looking forward to contributing and working with the Humane Society Board of Directors to help the organization to reach its goals.
William "Rex" Shurtleff - Vice President
Rex is a former President of the Humane Society of Pagosa Springs and has volunteered as a dog walker and trainer. He is a former co-chairman of the grants committee and the committee generated over $20,000 in grants for HSPS. Rex retired as a department manager from Sandia National Laboratories in 1997 after 32 years. He subsequently worked for Iowa State University for two years as executive director of a program for the Federal Aviation Administration. Rex has also volunteered for the USFS and as a county planning commissioner.
Nita Niece - Treasurer
Nita has resided in Pagosa Springs since 1992. She feels her time here has given her an understanding of the growth potential and future needs of the community, with reference to goals and services that would best serve Pagosa Springs and its Humane Society. Her background vocations consist of Office Management and service in public related fields. Nita has been a volunteer at the Humane Society for fifteen years, providing tax receipts, thank you letters, participates on fund raising committees such as the Chocolate Auction and the Auction for the Animals and has been serving on the Humane Society's Board of Directors since 2008. She has two dogs, the second adopted from the Katrina Hurricane animals sheltered by the Pagosa Springs Humane Society. Working with these animals gave her a sense of accomplishment that will last for a lifetime.
Bonnie Hite - Secretary
Bonnie and her husband Bob moved from the Tampa Bay area to Pagosa Springs in 2007. She has a B.S. in Environmental Studies from Eckerd College and two years of graduate work in Freshwater Biology at USF. Currently, Bonnie is a active volunteer with the Humane Society of Pagosa Springs and has been serving on the Advisory Council since 2008 as well as helping with several fundraising events, grant writing and dog walking throughout the years. She currently serves on the Board of St. Francis Wildlife Rehabilitation in Arboles and is a regular volunteer at the Hershey Ranch coordinating with Audubon and our elementary school kids to teach nature studies every fall. Bob and Bonnie live with their two dogs, six cats and three parrots (nine of which are rescues) and looks forward to continuing volunteering in our area.
Previously, Bonnie worked for a large engineering firm in Tampa as a private environmental consultant and partnered with her husband in an online business in Tampa named The Media Factory. She started an animal shelter in Tampa Bay with three others called Critter Adoption and Rescue Effort (C.A.R.E.) in Ruskin, FL in 2001 and served as V. President and then President of the Board for 3 years, was responsible for a monthly newsletter, web site design and maintenance, oversaw employees prior to hiring of shelter director, and was a weekly regular and WFLA-TV's morning television show "Daytime" for the Pet of the Week segment for two years. Bonnie worked for several weeks with United Animal Nation's Emergency Animal Rescue group in central Florida during the 2004 hurricane disasters and coordinated supplies to LA after Katrina for the group and remains active with the organization. She also served as Chair for the Citizen's Advisory Committee for the Tampa Bay National Estuary Program.
Joan Arnold - Board Member
Joan was born and raised in Harrogate, England. She met her husband there when he was stationed at the U.S. Army Base Menwith Hill.They moved to Pagosa in 1993 She was a veterinary assistant most of her adult life and has been a volunteer for the Humane Society since moving here and a board member numerous times. She volunteers twice weekly at the Thrift Store and at most events such as auctions etc. Joan and her husband have been married 50 years and have had dogs all their lives. Presently they have two rescued Golden Retrievers and Joan is interested in animal welfare, antiques, reading and walking.
Joe Donavan, DVM - Board Member
Joe has experience with Humane Societies in Madison, WI, Grand Cayman Island, as consultant, advisor, and practicing veterinarian and have worked as a hired consultant on the building of many kennels. As a veterinarian, Joe has owned and operated dog and cat boarding kennels, one of which had a capacity of over 200 pets. He has served as volunteer, on advisory board, board of directors, and vice president of Humane Society of Pagosa Springs, Protect Animal Life, Guiding Eyes for the Blind and many more non-profit groups.
Served on Board of Directors of Protect Animal Life, National Organization.
Mike Stoll - Executive Director
Mike Stoll was selected as the new Executive Director of the Humane Society of Pagosa Springs effective as of December 1, 2010. He and his wife, Anne Lincoln, and their two children have been active members of our community since their arrival 12 years ago. Mike has worked as an educator, a computer programmer and analyst, a rock climbing instructor and mountain guide, and an award-winning realtor. Additionally, Mike and his wife owned and operated an outdoor clothing design and manufacturing business for a decade.
