How to cope

A pet's death can be as difficult for some people as losing a parent or child. Animal lovers should keep these things in mind while processing their grief:

Denial, anger, guilt and depression are normal responses to a pet's illness or death. Confront these feelings with people who understand your loss and can relate to your grief.

Looking at pictures and writing about the animal will help.

Memorializing the pet is vital for getting past grief. The gesture might include a strategically placed portrait or a full burial service.

Seek out a support group. Exercise, eating right and getting plenty of rest go a long way toward feeling better after a loss.
